On Friday 16th February, five of Déda’s very own Academy students took to London for The National Centre of Circus Arts huge youth circus weekend, The National Youth Circus Event 2018. Déda Academy Students Macy, Elise, Luca, Rose and Sora were selected to take part in the event, accompanied by Déda Dance tutors Isobel Davis, Dance Development & Learning Co-ordinator and Youth Dance & Circus Tutor and Emily Concannon , Junior and Youth Aerial Support Artist.

Over the weekend the group took part in a number of workshops to develop their aerial and ground-based circus skills with staff from the NCCA.

Aerial skills included:

  • static, swinging and flying trapeze
  • aerial silks
  • aerial hoop
  • aerial rope
  • Chinese Pole.

The group also able to explored ground-based skills such as:

  • juggling
  • acrobatics
  • tumbling and acro-balance,
  • stilt walking
  • frantic assembly
  • contemporary street dance
  • unicycle
  • tight wire

Some skills were brand new to our group and all had a wonderful time learning from experienced artists and using the amazing facilities at the National Centre for Circus Arts.

After a day of workshops, the group were treated to a fabulous trip to see Circ Bizerk, presented by Zippo’s Circus at The Peacock Theatre.

Finally the group took part in a fabulous cabaret performance where they performed Chinese Circus, a piece specially choreographed by Déda for the NYCE 2018, which celebrated Chinese New Year and explored traditional aspects of Chinese Circus. This was a fabulous opportunity to perform and watch a range of unique Youth Circus performances and skills.

We had such an amazing weekend and we can’t thank the staff and tutors at The National Centre for Circus Arts enough for their time, enthusiasm and passion that they delivered throughout each and every workshop!
