Artistic Director Alice Vale has previously been Déda Artist in Residence and was recently recognised as Derbyshire's Inspirational Woman in the Arts. Alice teaches on the BA Dance degree course, regular Thursday night Beginners Ballet classes, and Youth Performance Companies InCompany and Bounceback.
Last week the Adaire to Dance creative team were back in the studio at Déda for phase one of research and development of their new work, Icarus (working title).
The dancers (Alice Vale, Hal Smith, Louis Parker-Evans and Victoria Heathcote), worked intensely with Matt and Rob (co-creators from Illuminos) exploring the possibilities of dance and digital projections including the creation of a labyrinth, the illusions of flying and motion inspired sketches. They worked and tasked themselves to refine and evolve ideas surrounding the interplay between projection and person.
Inspired by the myth and imagery of Icarus flying to the sun, the dancers also started work on constructing different group sections of weightlessness and playing with the illusion of height. Alice was lifted to dizzying heights as the dancers experimented with twisting and suspending her in the air.
Further work will continue in two weeks time, when the dancers will continue to develop the work along with Illuminos. They will continue to look at and grow the maze sequences, patterns with the projections on the gauzes and the flying moment, to gather ways to amaze and captivate the audiences imaginations…
Keep up to date with their progress on the Adaire To Dance blog!
