Introducing Bethan Smith: Our New Ballet Kids and Ballet Juniors Tutor

Hello everyone,

I’m Bethan and I have just started to work at Déda. I am going to be the new ballet teacher on Saturdays, which I am very excited about. For the past seven years I have been working as a professional ballet dancer in The Slovak National Ballet where I had the opportunity to work with some fantastic teachers and choreographers including Natalia Horecna, Daniel de Andrade, James Kudelka, Youri Vamos, Šárka Ondrišová and Andrej Petrovič.

Performing in fantastic varied repertoire was such a joy and something I will never forget. The repertoire ranged from classics including Swan Lake, Nutcracker, La Sylphide and A Midsummer Nights Dream to more modern contemporary pieces such as Laban, Slovak Dances and experimental projects.

While working in Slovakia I decided to study to become a dance teacher. I felt the need to use the knowledge and experiences I had gained and share them with others. I began my teaching at Vision Dance School where I was given the opportunity to teach but also be mentored by the fantastic teacher Sandra Knight.

I am also going to be running two workshops at the Duffield Arts Festival. I am hoping to reach out to adults who have always wanted to but never tried ballet. It is my aim to show the enjoyment in ballet and free movement, which is sometimes forgotten through competitions and examinations. Adult beginners ballet, ballet fitness and bringing ballet to the retirement homes is something I am thinking about for the future.

I am so excited to start working at Déda as it is a fantastic forward thinking, innovative space and is bringing the arts into focus in Derby. Teaching ballet to children will enable me to share my knowledge and hopefully inspire new generations. My classes will be light and fun giving the foundations for improvement in children’s technique but also enhancing their passion for dance.

Here is a quote I love from Martha Graham:

“Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance. Great dancers are great because of their passion”
