Ballet

Classes for Beginners and Intermediate level

The Bard at the Barre

Ben Spiller (36) hadn't been to a dance class before he took the plunge to sign-up for Beginners Ballet at Déda yesterday.

He told us that wanted to try something completely new in a supportive environment and Déda appealed to him because of its inclusive and participatory approach to dance.

He said: "I saw a fat hairy man amongst a sea of graceful women in the mirror at my first ballet class tonight. He looked a little awkward and more than a bit out of place. But I told him to keep his focus. And he did.

"Then he stretched, he dipped, he pointed, he did various French-named things with his toes, feet, legs and arms, he leaped, he sweated and he smiled. He felt like he'd achieved something far outside of his comfort zone, he was grateful to his friends who had joined and encouraged him, he was impressed by the brilliant and supportive teacher and he decided to return next week.

"I am proud of that fat hairy man in the mirror and I am grateful to Déda for giving him the opportunity to test himself. 'With a smile,' to echo the teacher."
