My name is Bronwyn Caplan and I am one of our many friendly Box Office staff members at Déda. Although I have not always worked at Déda, I began as a Front of House volunteer. I have always enjoyed volunteering and when I saw the volunteering vacancy advertised I thought it would be a great way to gain customer service experience and have access to doing and seeing as much dance as possible! After being a dedicated volunteer for 4 years, it did not go unnoticed and I finally joined the team officially and started working behind Box Office. This was really interesting as I thought I was already familiar with being in the Front of House Team, however I soon learned about other aspects, for example the fundraising and campaigns Déda work hard to achieve.
After graduating from The University of Derby in Dance & Movement Studies, I soon learned about another volunteering opportunity Déda has to offer. I did not hesitate to get a place on the Apprentice Dance Artist scheme. This is a brilliant programme we have here at Déda for all Dance Graduates and aspiring Artists. The programme allows you to develop professionally and be mentored by Déda’s dance tutors and gain practical experience within the industry. From gaining experience and progressing on this Apprenticeship I am now one of Déda’s Freelance Dance Teachers, and have been involved in both the START project and This is Derby project. I feel so lucky to be involved in Déda but in contrasting ways. I have the best of both worlds.
The Front of House team are a huge part of fundraising as we interact with our customers every day telling people about our projects and giving them the opportunity to donate. In my work as a freelance teacher for the Dance Development and Learning department I also get to see where the donations go. I witness what a positive impact it has on the people we work with, these projects make such an enriching experience for so many people!
Seeing how charities can improve people’s lives has only made my passion for fundraising and volunteering grow bigger every day! This is why in 2019 I am also volunteering with the charity Dig Deep. This charity focuses on giving clean water to areas of East Africa and the money raised goes on building toilets and taps across communities that do not have running water. This year, I am climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for the charity and have been set a target of £2,990 to raise before the big climb!
