Shannon is going on to studying an MSc in Marketing and Creative Advertising at Manchester University.

Shannon came to Déda as a second year Journalism student at the University of Derby last March, interested in completing a work placement in a different working environment to that of the newsroom or sports desk.

Shannon’s placement at Déda was wonderfully successful and she worked across marketing and dance development departments to document events in the building and compile features that were published on the Déda website and in local press. She contributed to collaborative projects such as the launch of new Zumba classes and Hercules - A Dance Cabaret (presented by New Art Club, Dance4, Déda and Derby Theatre last Summer).

"During my time at Déda, I learned a lot of things about both the work place and myself. It began as a 4 week placement in the Marketing department, where I worked alongside my mentor Heather Gunn. I studied Journalism at the University of Derby when I went to Déda on placement, and working in this field was a slight change from what I was learning in the classroom.

I couldn't have had a nicer mentor to work with and learn from, not to mention the rest of the staff at Déda. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly, even with me being shy at first. I felt comfortable working away in the office very quickly and was kept busy at all times. I was given various different tasks everyday where I could apply the skills I learned on my journalism course such as blogging, interviewing, feature writing and using social media.

This placement taught me things about writing, marketing and social media that you can't learn from University - which is why I believe carrying out work experience whilst studying is so important. I feel lucky to have found a place like Déda to learn these skills from.

After the placement was finished, I wasn't ready to go! I carried on working with Heather voluntarily as an Ambassador and it's actually made me rethink my entire career trajectory - so much so, I will be studying MSc Marketing and Creative Advertising as of September 2016.

I had never before thought about working in Marketing with my degree but after my work experience with Déda I just wanted to learn even more! I am so grateful to my mentor Heather and the rest of the staff at Déda who have helped me along the way to realising where I want to go with my career in the future.

For anyone thinking about work experience in Marketing, PR and even Journalism like myself, then I highly recommend contacting Déda, you won't regret it."
