A Hip Hop twist on the story of Oliver at Déda

On Friday 6 May Déda is delighted to host Fagin’s Twist, an ambitious reimagining of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist by innovative hip-hop/contemporary dance company Avant Garde Dance.

Led by Artistic Director Tony Adigun, Fagin’s Twist presents an evocative story of Fagin's youth, corrupted by greed and worn down by poverty.

Featuring five of the familiar Oliver Twist characters – Oliver, Fagin, Bill Sykes, Nancy and the Artful Dodger – Fagin’s Twist reimagines the paths of their lives and their individual circumstances. Some offer us rare glimpses of human pathos, whilst others are seen in a darker, more mysterious light.

Dickens wrote the novel as a commentary on child poverty and social injustice. Taking the classic piece of literature as its starting point, Tony Adigun and Avant Garde Dance present a poignant coming-of-age dance drama which draws parrallels between Victorian London and the modern society we inhabit.

For the production, Avant Garde Dance has worked with dramaturg Adam Peck and writer Maxwell Golden to add subtle layers of texture and precision. The specially written score, composed by Benji Bower and Brian Hargreaves, is an eclectic patchwork of styles to conjure up an atmosphere of urban adversity and survival.

Tony Adigun has said “I have always been excited by the idea of retelling a popular tale. I wanted to add a mischievous twist that would play with – and challenge – the audiences’ perspectives of a much-loved classic.”

Déda is delighted to be hosting Fagin’s Twist on Friday 6 May at 1pm and 7.30pm. The 1pm performance is open to school groups who would like to make the most of this opportunity, to see a vibrant, exciting company re-tell a traditional tale in a contemporary, hip-hop style. Tickets are £12 (£10 concession) and can be purchased online at www.deda.uk.com, or directly from the Box Office on 01332 370911.
