This Is Derby is a new project backed by the Department for Education’s Opportunity Area Fund which sees the sports and arts sectors of the city come together to better the futures of Derby’s youngsters.
The project was successful in securing £1 million from the government fund this summer and is set to launch its citywide movement over the coming weekends in a series of roadshow events.
The first of the events will be held at the Racecourse Playing Fields, from 11am-3pm on Saturday 27th October, and will transform the football fields and local community centre into a performance space for multiple city artists to perform, from Sinfin MC Eyez and Derby’s Urban Choir to circus performers and the first preview of Hiccup Theatre’s Goldilocks before it goes live at Derby Theatre in December.
There will be a host of sports and arts workshops and activities for children and their families to get involved in too.
The stage show will then hit the road and arrive at Arboretum Park (Grove Street car park) on Saturday 28th October, from 10am-1pm, bringing the cornucopia of performers, artists and activities from the previous day along with it, before heading to Bramblebrook Community Centre and Stockbrook Park for the afternoon, from 2pm-5pm.
To round off the tour, the roadshow will be back the following weekend of the 3rd and 4th of November, setting up in Sinfin, at the Community Centre and on Rothesay Close, from 11pm-3pm, before finishing on the Sunday for the final day at Allenton Outdoor Market, again from 11am-3pm.
All events are free of charge for all who want to attend as a participant or a family. The scheme is aimed at boosting the educational attainment of 5-18 year olds in Derby who live within higher areas of deprivation, as outlined by the Department for Education.
Alix Manning-Jones, Derby’s Cultural Education Producer, “This is a fantastic opportunity for families and young people to find out more about the programme, from exciting live performances to new activities for them to try as part of the This Is Derby movement which will be delivering on the doorstep’s of local communities throughout the next year.”
