10am - Denis Tricot's Sculpture Garden
Internationally-renowned artist Denis Tricot begins to create large-scale wooden sculptures in the River Gardens. Using flexible planks of wood Denis will build beautiful structures on the banks of the River Derwent. These sculptures will be set alight at the close of Festé weekend. Watch Denis at work in the River Gardens throughout the weekend.
2pm - QUAD Opens!
Be amongst the first to see inside Derby’s new £11 million centre for art and film. Explore the first two exhibitions from international artists Jane & Louise Wilson and Bill Drummond, sample the Coors Café Bar and see inside the two new cinema spaces alongside a whole host of other facilities.
6.30pm - The Giants of Derby awaken!
QUAD has been working with local people to breathe new life in to the Giants of Derby’s past. Marvel as these six giant street puppets mingle with the crowds and showcase the heritage and history of Derby in a specially choreographed performance in the Market Place. Who will you see? Who has made the biggest impact on the city? Alongside the Giants, 100’s of children from Derby schools will sing songs from the Singing Playgrounds collection of music to inspire and enliven the Giants and entertain the crowds.
From 7pm
Street performers Artizani, Circo Rum Ba Ba, Dot Comedy, Nutkhut and Maison Foo will be on hand to amaze and entertain you in the Market Place.
8pm - An Invasion of giant insects!
Spanish street art company Sarruga, who presented the memorable parade of The Dragons last year, make a welcome return to Derby.
Starting at the Cathedral Sarruga presents a performance of Insects. Expect the streets to be overrun by creepy crawlies in another exciting and unmissable event for all the family! Line the streets to get the best view
8.45pm
The Insects will lead you back into the Market Place for a performance of Heliosphere. Using music, lighting and the location, Heliosphere creates the illusion of flying. The impossible becomes possible.
Spiralling and spinning and seemingly weightless, an acrobat suspended beneath a helium balloon will explore the uncharted spaces of Derby Market Place, to a new soundtrack for Derby, especially created by contemporary composer Scanner.
Following Heliosphere the festivities culminate in a spectacular and mesmerising display of pyrotechnics by internationally-renowned company Walk The Plank, to mark the official launch of QUAD.
A broadcast from birdsongradio.com will complete the atmosphere.
