![]() |
Taste dance styles from around the world with Sonia Sabri’s Bollyworld performance at the South Asian Arts Festival in Derby Market Place on Sunday 25 July.
Renowned for her unique fusion of classical Indian dance with funky urban moves, Sonia has been working with five choreographers from Derby to create a unique performance, blending five very different dance styles. Specialists in a range of styles from Bhangra to Contemporary to Hip-Hop, the five choreographers have each created a section inspired by the natural elements, which will then join together in a spectacular Bollywood-themed celebration performance.
Déda Dance Artist Bryony Mylroie-Smith has choreographed a Contemporary section and will be performing with six dancers from Déda’s youth performance group, Incompany. The other choreographers involved in the project include Vijay Mehay whose dance style is Bhangra, Breakdancer Nathan Geering, Nisha Nath – Kathak and Bollywood and Will Garner dancing in a contemporary style. Kate Roundings, a musician and lecturer has been creating the score for the performance alongside students from Derby College and Burton College.
Bryony comments:
“It has been a great collaborative experience because we’ve all been learning each others styles”
The aim of the project is to celebrate different dance styles and the creative potential for cross cultural collaboration. With its Bollywood undercurrent and celebratory feel, the South Asian Arts Festival is the ideal platform for this performance. Bollyworld will take place on the Market Place between 5 and 6pm on Sunday 25 July.
The South Asian Arts festival is one of the biggest outdoor live Asian music events in the East Midlands. Derby will be brought to life with Indian classical, Bollywood, Bhangra and fusion dance and music. There will be an array of international artists performing, children’s story-telling, Asian fashion and beauty stalls and delicious food outlets.
The Bollywood performance has been commissioned by Déda, Surtal Asian Arts, Cultural Landscape and Derby City Partnership. The Sonia Sabri Commission is Déda’s signature project in its role as a County Partner Organisation for the Youth Dance England regional delivery programme. In partnership with Dance4 and Youth Dance England.
