World Record Attempt by Young Derby Dancers
Big Dance Schools Pledge

Schools Pledge – Friday 18 May Derby Market Place, 12pm – 2pm

Déda and the Derby City School Sports Partnership are working alongside Big Dance 2012 in an attempt to beat the Guinness World Record for 'The Largest Dance Routine – Multi Venue'. They are recruiting local schools and groups to join together in Derby Market Place on Friday 18 May to perform the Schools Pledge.

The Big Dance festival will take place across the UK from 7-15 July 2012 as part of London 2012 Festival, with a 7-week countdown period starting on 18 May 2012.

Derby Market Place has been selected as one of the UK’s Live Sites for the Schools Pledge, with participants performing the routine alongside national coverage of the event which will be streamed on the BBC Big Screen.

Everyone is invited to join in and make dance part of their lives.

The Schools Pledge is in two parts:
• Learn the choreography and take part in a world record attempt for the 'Largest Dance Routine - Multi-venue' at 1pm on 18 May 2012
• Undertake an additional 20 minutes of dance a day during Big Dance week (7-15 July 2012)

Since March 2012 schools and communities across Derbyshire and Derby City have been learning and rehearsing the Schools Pledge, ready to participate in the largest simultaneous international dance routine. From midday on Friday the 18 May, local schools and groups will be joining together in Derby Market Place to perform the Schools Pledge and unite with the rest of the world to break the current record.

Choreographer of the Schools Pledge, Wayne McGregor, believes;
"The Schools Pledge is a fantastic and fun opportunity for young people of all ages to learn a new dance inspired by the Olympics and to perform it as part of our world record attempt. On the day the Olympic Torch arrives in the UK, young dancers throughout Britain and in our partner countries worldwide will share a unique moment in time, dancing together and in unison, sharing our passion for the art form we love.”

This event is being coordinated by longstanding partners Déda and Derby City School Sports Partnership, who together will verify the proceedings as part of the world record breaking attempt.

The event will start from 12 noon with a live warm up and informal rehearsal provided by Déda, followed by the record attempt at 1pm and a creative movement workshop afterwards.

In addition to the Schools Pledge, the Big Dance Bus is coming to Westfield in Derby, the only stop in the East Midlands region, on the 7 June 2012 from 12pm – 5pm. The bus is touring round the UK, showcasing four professional dance pieces at each stop, as well as providing a number of performance slots for local groups and schools to exhibit their talent.

Big Dance 2012 will be the UK’s biggest ever celebration of dance. Taking place across the UK, this biennial festival will feature thousands of events inspired by dance. Showcasing the diversity of dance styles across the country events will include classes, workshops, performances, competitions, have-a-go days and dancing in unusual locations throughout the UK.
