The extended composition 'Tales from the Jacquard’ was commissioned from Julian by Derby Jazz in 2017.

The suite draws inspiration from the lace-making process and the Jacquard cards, which controlled the lace knitting machines. (Julian’s parents and family ran a lace manufacturing business in Nottingham for over 50 years).

Essentially contemporary Julian's writing for the band miraculously weaves together; "field" recordings of clattering lace making machines, memories of his father's Count Basie records and Julian's experiences playing with contemporary masters Hermeto Pascall and Andrew Hill. It also sets up a kalidoscope of soloing opportunities for his stella soloists.

The Orchestra features some of Julian's favourite musicians from the UK and European scenes and presents a rare opportunity to see such a stellar line-up.
