Café Bar Event

Join us as we creatively express to de-stress and un-oppress on International Women's Day. MC Rebecca Muir of BexStar Entertainment Productions will programme and present powerful poetry, spoken word, music, dance, and comedy, plus songs of protest and affirmation from the Rebel Women's Choir.

Supporters of all genders are welcome to cheer on those taking the mic to amplify the voices of women, girls and non-binary siblings rising in resistance to misogyny as #DerbySpeaksUp. There will be some open mic slots available to sign up on the night. Whether you are a seasoned performer or coming forward for the first time, this annual event is always an inclusive and supportive space with uplifting intersectional feminism vibes and an unforgettably liberating atmosphere  #IWD2024

Accompanied children are welcome to attend free of charge; more mature themes will be scheduled after 9pm (you know your kids best) and those taking the mic are asked to give any necessary care / trigger notices. Tickets are offered on a pay-what-you-can basis and all proceeds raised will support International Women's Day Derby; for anyone unable to pay there are some free solidarity tickets available, please e-mail[email protected]

This event is brought to you as part of the volunteer-powered International Women's Day Derby Festival. Look out for inspiring actions and speakers online via @DerbySpeaksUp and @WomensDayDerby on social media throughout Friday 8th March. The celebrations continue on Saturday 9th March with a Women's Rights March joined by giant protest puppet HERoes and placards for women worldwide, meeting at The Spot at 11am and marching through the city centre to join the Market Place Marquee at 12pm. The huge marquee, in the very spot where Suffragettes spoke to large crowds to call for votes for women, will be open from 11am - 4pm (the first hour 11am-12pm is a neuro-divergent-friendly Quiet Hour); the festivities will feature inspiring changemakers & trailblazers, 30+ stalls, causes & campaigns including the Derby Speaks Upproject and selfie frame, arts & crafts, food stalls, family fun, multicultural performances including Anansi Theatre Company,Surtal Arts,Hoverla Dance Ensemble, Shakti Arts and the Rebel Women's Choir, a drumming circle, women's sports demos, women's enterprise, public services and support groups, a fire engine crewed by women who are firefighters and more! Visit the website for more information:https://womensdayderby.wordpress.com
